Here’s what I discovered that might help you. For some reason, it’s not taught much out there. Most people don’t seem to understand the value of Google Webmaster Tools (GWT).

If you’re not using GWT you need to. Google Analytics (GA) tells you what keywords people ARE using to get to your site and GWT tells you which keywords you’re ranking for but ARE NOT working… yet. It’s killer.

Adjust the filters at the top to show all queries.

Find long tail keyword phrases that have more than 10 searches a month (the more the better – tackle the keywords with the most views first). Write a 400 word article about that topic using that keyword for the article title and page title. Use it as a tag. Link the keyword in that article to the page that Google says is getting some page impressions but no clicks.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

These go on your site – not anywhere else.

FYI, I sort of disagree that 75-80% of articles go on other sites. I think it’s down near 50-60% at the most. You want your own, good content on your site.

More About Using Google Webmaster Tools for On-Site Support Articles

Link the new post to the article that Google is saying you’re already starting to rank for. Use the exact keyword phrase. These are all on your site – not other sites. You don’t have to do any linking to the new article. Google will find it.

It’s a short article on your site based on a long tail keyword that you’re automatically ranking for. It’s low hanging fruit. I’d make them 300-350 words each since they’re just supporting articles.

Do like 10-15 new articles and then wait a few weeks and check out the results. You’ll be ranking higher for each one. It’s good to rank #1 or #2 for long tails. I think Google pays about the same for those as your main keyword since they’re variations for something like that.

I got a site ranking #3 for a pretty competitive keyword. It rose from #8 to #5, then #4 and then #3. Great. But then I noticed it dipping down to #4. So I’ll write a quick article, post it and then usually within a few minutes I’m back up to #3 again. So I feel like I’m in a keyword war with another website. It’s interesting.

I’m getting a bunch of articles written and when they get posted, it’ll hopefully be a full blitz onslaught against my competition. We’ll see. If not, I’ll keep fighting!

My goal with that site is to totally dominate the niche. I’ll keep going until I get there. I’m seeing a huge, huge difference in being #4 for a keyword versus #3. Other searches are up at #1 and are doing great. I want to get them all up there. I’ve gone too far now to stop!

There’s a literal goldmine out there for keyword websites. All you do is use Google Webmaster Tools to look for keywords you’re getting clicks on AND keywords you’re showing up for but not getting clicks. Google Analytics doesn’t do the latter. I’m not sure many people realize this.

Then you just build a post for each keyword phrase on your supersite. They all relate to each other, build off each other and basically snowball. The snowball effect you get works well.

Do some UAW articles, get links and write guest posts and then all your results move up in the rankings.

I wish I knew all of this a year or two years ago.

I had my buddy Jason over last weekend and I explained The Keyword Academy program to him a bit more.

He had started a new website and was all excited about it but I did some quick research and found that he wasn’t targeting the right keyword. It would have taken him forever to get anywhere with that site. He was able to retool that site for a similar keyword and he’ll work on that but I think I got him onto the right track with first researching and finding the right keywords.

I did that, too, actually – like a year ago. I spent time setting up a bunch of sites where I thought I had the right keywords and it turned out I was wrong. I think this is the biggest mistake people are making. The air gets let out of their balloon when they don’t see any results.

Speaking of getting results, you are probably going to need to write 30-40 articles per site to start seeing anything worth writing home about. Jason asked me how much I thought my hourly rate was by putting that much work into sites and I said I didn’t look at it like that. I see these sites as producing revenue for months and years into the future, where I’ll do little to maintain them. So you can’t really say there’s an hourly rate. If there is, it’s a big number.
